Brainstorming at Local Schools — The Grass Owl Map Workshop
Did you know that the Grass Owl is a Category I endangered species in Taiwan? Through the field research and artwork created by artist Ying-Ying Wang during her residency, we’ve gained a deeper understanding of these birds, which live surprisingly close to human habitats. Unfortunately, urban solar power development and the expansion of science parks have severely impacted their territory. Combined with threats like stray dogs and rodenticides, their population has dwindled to only 300–500 nationwide.
Looking back at the workshop held at Shoushan Primary School, Ying-Ying shared the story of the Grass Owl to guide fifth graders through a collage activity. They brainstormed together, asking: "If I were a farmer, how could I help the Grass Owls overcome these challenges?" The session also introduced farms with Grass Owl Friendly labels and how they coexist with nature. To top it off, Ying-Ying treated the students to yogurt ice cream made from the farm‘s organic bananas. By starting with environmental conservation and bringing the From Farm To Fork process into schools, we hope to inspire a new generation to cherish our land and all its precious species.
