Mark IJzerman's workshop: Fluid Perspectives - Aquatic Ecosystems in Art

This workshop, in collaboration with the College of Marine Sciences at National Sun Yat-sen University, focuses on the artistic representation of aquatic ecosystems and multispecies thinking, exploring how art can convey the ecological relationships within aquatic environments. The course integrates Mark IJzerman's creative experience with cultural historian Astrida Neimanis’s theory of hydrofeminism, guiding students to develop an artistic conceptual framework that regards aquatic organisms as both subjects of thought and creative partners.

Through field activities, participants will visit the Pier-2 waterfront to observe and document the surrounding environment using listening, sampling, and olfactory exploration, as well as collect plankton samples and record underwater sounds. These activities aim to awaken the senses, redefine one’s relationship with the environment, and invite participants from diverse fields to step into the world of artistic creation.
