Ya-Ling is an illustrator from Tainan Taiwan. She was given the name of Ya-Ling by her parents. It’s the same pronunciation of “dumbbell” in Chinese.Ya-Ling doesn’t want to be a sportsperson - she wants to be an illustrator, artist and storyteller.
Ya-Ling’s background is Fine Art undertaken at Taichung University of Education in Taiwan and completed in 2010.During her time at university,she found her true interest in storytelling and illustration. Ya-Ling later traveled to Australia on a working holiday and loved doing street busking drawing portraits and observational sketches.
Ya-Ling completed her MA inChildren’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art in 2016. In the same year, her works were selected for the2016 Bologna Book Fair, highly commended in Macmillan prize, Poland Katowice"A Well Designed Book" and recently awarded in the UK Picture This! international illustration competition.
Her illustrations are mostly drawn by hand with the application of a little humor in her works. The prime materials preferred are watercolor, gouache and color pencil. She has a strong interest in collage art as well. Ya-Ling likes to describe something little and ordinary, simple but powerful. Ya-Ling suggested most of her works appeal not only to herself but also for others and not only for children but also for adults.
