Gareth Bunting is an artist and keen traveler. His work is a kind ofvisual diary which documents his travels in the form of drawing. His drawingsare often large scale, vast and surreal landscapes which map out places andexperiences. He sees the landscape as a comic strip or story board which can beused to tell the tales of the people and objects existing within it. He playswith scale and perspective, and leads the eye of the viewer along lines andwinding paths and roads, through impossible landscapes containing repeating andevolving imagery, forming narratives in one static image. He is interested inhis own identity as a western male artist abroad, and seeks to investigatecultural similarities, and the collective unconscious. He works from memory andimagination as well as from life, mixing together the real and the unreal toportray his own world based heavily on real places, with a fantastical twist, illustrating how a place exists in one’s mind after a journey. His dreamlike, sprawling, surreal and detailed landscapes question the nature of places, spaces, and borders and investigate environmental, political, social andpersonal issues. Using fractal patterns he explores the contrast between eastand west, rich and poor, the banal and the extreme, and the mechanical andorganic in order to remind us that we are ourselves part of nature.
