Finding mud taste workshop—Szu-Ni Wen & Russ Ligtas

Milkfish, called Bangus in Cebuano, is one of the foods Russ misses most in New York. When Szu-Ni took him to eat fried milkfish in Yancheng District, he smiled without saying a word. A few days later, he said the milkfish from Pangasinan tastes sweeter and lacks the mud taste.

Szu-Ni kept pondering this “mud taste(thôo-bī ),” reflecting on how Kaohsiung and Cebu—both industrial cities—are linked as sister cities. When thôo-bī becomes trendy again, it signals an evolution of cultural identity into a new form. It is at once a process of looking inward and outward.

The artists will guide participants to begin from this idea and relate it to their own experience, whilst seeing the city with fresh eyes.

No prior artistic experience is needed to join this workshop—just bring an open heart! (Or perhaps, your own Yancheng milkfish recommendations.)
