How do we live with the unknown?

In the past, salt production thrived in Yancheng. Salt workers worshipped the Sun God, praying for stable weather during the salt-drying process. Through their faith, they found spiritual support to help them cope with the uncertainty of the future.

At the Pier-2 Art Center, I work with salt and Xuan paper, using their light and semi-transparent qualities to express the intangible realm of the spirit. Yet unexpectedly, these materials also captured the lived experiences of salt workers who depended on the weather. Whenever it rains, the salt grains once fixed onto the Xuan paper absorb moisture and dissolve, rendering the finished work uncertain. My emotions rise and fall with it, just like those of the salt workers who once prayed for sunny days.

Looking back, I realize that ever since graduating from art school, my journey as an artist has been filled with uncertainty, and my works have been created in response to my encounters with the unknown.

Suddenly, I understand: faith finds its meaning in a life filled with uncertainty.
