Cha Ji Ryang utilizes media at the intersection of the individual and the system, envisioning a trans-individual dream in which one can fully exist as oneself. His work traverses exhibitions, performances, and digital platforms, creating time-spaces where sound, light, and image intersect. Since his first solo exhibition The Expressions to Move (2008), Cha has developed projects such as Midnight Parade (2010, Arko Art Center) and Temporary Enterprise (2011, SeMA), fostering encounters through shared spatial experiences. He has continued bringing people together in various artistic contexts, collaborating with those in need of housing in New Home (2012), exploring the extremities of state systems in K-refugees (2014–), and addressing youth migration in BATS Project (2016–).
Having spent time in diverse environments, Cha has examined the fluidity of identity and belonging, sharing personal experiences of time-space through BGM (2018) and Only people who decided to leave, can see everything (2019). His recent works, Dream Pop (2022–) and Living Room (2023–), explore the intersection of trans-individual dreams and collective perception. In Busan Biennale 2024: Seeing in the Dark, he presented Like everything being seen has a bow (2024), weaving delicate vibrations between personal and collective existence and revealing the shifting landscapes of being.
